EXTOL TOASTMASTERS Meeting No. 399 on 15 Oct 2014 at 7.00pm



Our theme for this meeting, “Power of Freedom” was indeed great! It was a heavy rain and thunderstorm day again! The power to be really upset our meeting agenda as four of our appointed role players were caught up somewhere but the members present set themselves to take over all the necessary roles. Kudos, all our members!

We warmly welcome our General Evaluator, Lai Yoong Hean, ACB, CL from Sunway Toastmasters Club. We also extend our welcome to Michael Wong, ACB, ALB and Jessica Tan from Real Toastmasters Club. Thank you for being with us.



Our experienced ASA, Obaidullah called the meeting to order in his usual clam and suave manner. Well done, Obaid!

TME, Ken Koh, CC


Second time TME, Ken Koh, CC conducted the meeting efficiently. He not only related the history of Toastmasters International but also inspired us with a Scottish story with the theme, “Power of Freedom”. It was awesome, Ken!

President, Jeannie, ACB


President, Jeannie, ACB admonished to use whatever power we have to do positive things in moderation as too much or too little power will not bring the desired effects. Well said, Jeannie!

Grammarian, Michael Wong, ACB, ALB


Michael Wong, ACB, ALB was the Grammarian. He introduced the Word Of The Day, “Ability” in line with the theme of the meeting, “Power of Freedom”. Great job, Michael!

PY Wong, ACB was the invocator for this meeting and inspired us to be better people and better citizens. Well said, PY!

We had a very unique Table Topics session conducted by Jeannie, ACB with the current popular topic of discussion on “petrol price hikes” viewed from different perspectives.

All the five plucky volunteers, PY Wong, ACB, SK Ratnam, DTM, Tan Joke Boey, Jessica Tan and Michael Wong, ACB, ALB gave very informative and stirring impromptu speeches of their relevant perspectives as a businessman, a housewife, a normal consumer, a normal citizen and as the government respectively.

Well done, all ‘speak off the cuff’ speakers!

The Best Table Topics Speaker went to SK Ratnam, DTM. Congratulations, SK!

Table Topics Evaluator, Obaidullah


The Table Topics Evaluator, Obaidullah was a very effective evaluator as he could detect a strong point and also an area of improvement for each speaker within 5 minutes which was splendid. Remarkably well done, Obaid!

After our break, we enjoyed four project speeches. 


The first speaker, Tan Joke Boey

The first speaker, Tan Joke Boey did a speech from the Competent Communicative Manual #3 titled, “Nothing is black or white”. It was about the beliefs and struggles of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. She also compared them with the present day struggles for freedom by the people in other countries.  That was a great speech, Joke Boey!

Her evaluator, SK Ratnam, DTM was very moved by her speech and encouraged her to keep it up. Thank you, SK!

 
The second speaker, Jessica Tan

The second speaker, Jessica Tan, presented a speech from the Competent Communicative Manual #4 titled, “Intimidating Challenge” about her exciting, thrilling and awe-inspiring mountain hiking experiences. Bravo, Jessica!


Kwa Ngan Eng, DTM


Kwa Ngan Eng, DTM, her evaluator gave a very comprehensive evaluation on her speech and encouraged her to continue to excel. Thank you, Ngan Eng!


The third speaker, Pun Yew Kee

The third speaker, Pun Yew Kee, did a speech from the Competent Communicative Manual #7 titled, “The Silent Killer” on the risks, dangers and hazards of cigarette smoking which all should abstain from. Thank you for your advice, Yew Kee!

His evaluator, Michael Wong, ACB, ALB, gave him a very heartening evaluation to encourage him to improve further in his speech. Thank you, Michael! 


The fourth speaker, Jeannie, ACB

The fourth speaker, Jeannie, ACB presented a speech from Advance Manual, Special Occasion Speech #2 titled, “Tribute to Lucy Maud Montgomery” which was very touching, inspiring and uplifting. Well done, Jeannie!

Her evaluator, PY Wong, ACB was very pleased and satisfied with her speech and congratulated her on a speech well done. Thank you, PY!


The Best Speaker, Jessica Tan

The Best Speaker went to Jessica Tan! Congratulations, Jessica!

Best Evaluator, Michael Wong, ACB, ALB

And the Best Evaluator went to Michael Wong, ACB, ALB! Congratulations, Michael!

First time Ah Counter, Jessica Tan, was very attentive and provided a detailed and accurate report on the word crutches used by the speakers during the meeting. Good job, Jessica!

Michael Wong, ACB, ALB was very focused and did a good job as a Grammarian. Great job, Michael!

Timekeeper, Pun Yew Kee kept time accurately as shown by his report at the end of the meeting. Timely job, Yew Kee! 

Jeannie, ACB, the Listening Evaluator picked up ten mind-boggling questions from the speeches during the meeting in which only PY Wong, ACB could get five correct answers whereas the others had less than five correct answers.  Well done, Jeannie! 


General Evaluator, Lai Yoong Hean, ACB, CL was very observant and gave a very detailed evaluation of all the role players, speakers, evaluators and the whole meeting. Thank you, Yoong Hean!
President, Jeannie, ACB closed the meeting by encouraging all members to continue to strive towards not only their personal growth and successes but also the club success as well! Thank you, Jeannie!
